Carey dreams about playing Juliet

Posted by Fram on Sep 22nd, 2010 under Articles, Carey News

Actress Carey Mulligan has revealed that she very keen to play Juliet in William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet on Broadway.

The 25-year-old actress said she hopes to hit the stage as Juliet in a new production next year.

“I’ve been talking to someone about Romeo and Juliet and I’d never sort of gone after it and tried to make that happen. I’ve never done Shakespeare, so that really scares me. But it’s exciting,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.

“I won’t be able to play Juliet in a couple of years and if I’m ever gonna do it I should do it now,” she added.

The Education star insists she’ll always return to the stage in between movies because she’s more comfortable on stage.

She said: “I love doing film, but I do think I’m more comfortable on stage because the film was never the dream.”

Carey: “I wanted to be Macaulay Culkin”

Carey Mulligan wanted to be Macaulay Culkin when she was younger, the 25-year-old actress admits.

The Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps star says she was passionate about plays when she attended Woldingham, an all girls’ independent UK boarding school.

She tells US Vogue that she used to play the men’s roles and that her favourite film was Home Alone.

“I wanted to be Macaulay Culkin,” says Mulligan who, according to the magazine, also wanted to be Daniel Day Lewis.

These days Mulligan is reportedly dating Wall Street co-star Shia LaBeouf.

But she shies away from talking about their relationship. Instead the actress prefers to keep a low profile, letting her work speak for itself.

Carey – who appears in the new film Never Let Me Go with Keira Knightley – got her big break playing Knightley’s sister in the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice.

But she says: “I don’t want to be ‘known’. I’m afraid of being a ‘personality’.

“On a talk show, I feel I should just hold up a sign with the facts on it – and leave.

“It wouldn’t take more than a minute and they’d have room for the other guests.’

Carey buys tickets to her own movies

Carey Mulligan has admitted buying tickets to her own movies to boost box office sales.

The Never Let Me Go actress said she regularly snaps up scores of seats.

And she even hangs around in the cinema queue to persuade filmgoers to see her flicks.

She said: ‘It’s mainly just to try and bump up the box office.

‘I go and buy, like, 30.

‘I went last night [in New York] and stood outside with my friend and we watched people go in and then we would go up to people and say, ‘What are you going to see?’

‘And they’d be like, ‘Oh, Never Let Me Go’.

‘And I’d be like, ‘Oh, it’s awesome’.’

During an appearance on US talk show Live With Regis & Kelly, the Hollywood beauty also revealed that she always landed male roles as an actress in school productions.

Carey, 25, said: ‘I’ve always had this low voice and I was kind of a tomboy. I had an older brother and hung with his friends.

‘I always played drunks or men.’

She added: ‘I always thought the male roles were more dramatic.’

003.jpgWHO: Carey Mulligan

WHAT: The actress goes for drama at the New York premiere of Never Let Me Go on September 14.

WEAR: An Elie Saab cocktail dress and Everlon Diamont Knot Collection earrings

Fresh from promoting her latest flick at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival, the always classy Carey Mulligan showed up at yesterday’s NYC screening of Never Let Me Go wearing a black lace and tulle cocktail dress by Elie Saab (see it on the runway) and Everlon Diamond Knot jewels. We thought the dramatic little dress, adorned with ribbon and intricate lace details, set the perfect tone for the sci-fi thriller (also starring Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley) about three siblings with a haunting history. The movie is based on the novel by Japanese-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro.

Carey on Her New Movie “Never Let Me Go”

Posted by Fram on Sep 16th, 2010 under Articles, Carey News

Published: September 15, 2010

Carey Mulligan stars in director Mark Romanek’s film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel, “Never Let Me Go,” which opens today.

The British actress was nominated earlier this year for a best actress Oscar for her depiction of innocence shattered in “An Education.” Mulligan made her film debut in “Pride and Prejudice,” which co-starred Keira Knightley. Mulligan and Knightley co-star again in “Never Let Me Go,” but instead of playing sisters, they portray rivals in a haunting love triangle.

Without giving too much of the sci-fi plot twist away, the women ultimately learn that although they are less than fully human — and medically destined for an early demise — their souls are real. Speakeasy spoke with Mulligan and Romanek in New York last night, as they prepared for the film’s premiere.

We asked Mulligan how she accessed the very deep emotions called for in this role. “I really took my cue from the book,” she said, noting that her character “doesn’t have much to say and she’s an observer for much of the film. Every time I was in a scene where I wasn’t quite sure where I was going with it, I would go to the book and read through the lines because she’s unreliable, in that much of the time she’s not being truly honest with herself or the audience.”

Romanek said that Mulligan’s acting “has a style that is very unique, at least in this film. She’s sort of a minimalist and yet it resonates with a lot of emotion. It’s almost a mystical thing that she does. It actually affected the way I shot the film and inspired me to create a context for this unusual style of acting, a visual grammar for Kazuo’s style of writing, which is deceptively simple. It’s an interesting hybrid between a Japanese and British sensibility, so it has a reserve and an understatement to it.”

Because Mulligan is friends with Knightley, we asked her if it was difficult to play rivals when you’re really friends with someone. “No, it was fun!” Mulligan replied. “When you know somebody, it’s actually easier, especially since Keira and I are great friends. We can be really blunt and honest with each other, without feeling insulted or hurt.”

Meltdown when Shia proposed

CAREY Mulligan flipped out when boyfriend Shia LaBeouf proposed to her — for a scene for their new movie!

The Oscar-nominated British actress — who stars alongside Shia in upcoming flick Wall Street 2 — says she was so touched by the touching scene that she had a “complete meltdown”.

“It was a really dramatic scene,” she says. “And that was one day I had a complete meltdown.

“Shia was pretty amazing, that day he was doing all these heart-breaking scenes and took my breath away. But I would be watching and then turn round and end up looking straight down the lens of the camera and it would put me off so badly.”

Carey recently insisted she’ll never end up scarily skinny.

“The thinnest I have ever been was after I had my appendix out, during the London run of The Seagull,” she said.

“I went down to 112 pounds and realized my brain doesn’t work when I’m that thin, so I can’t do my job.

“I never had that whole Hollywood pressure thing — I never said I wanted to be a lead actress; I never said I wanted to be a film actress. “

Carey’s Broadway “lessons”

Posted by Fram on Sep 16th, 2010 under Articles, Carey News

Published: September 16, 2010

Carey Mulligan has revealed working on Broadway gave her a reality check.

The Oscar-nominated actress said she learned a lot when she was working on stage at the start of this year.

“I learned quite a few lessons about self-indulgent acting when I was doing the play,” she laughed.

“I used to do shows where I thought I was really brilliant and I’d come off stage and the audience were completely unresponsive.”

She added: “I got a million notes from my director.”

Carey flew into the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her new movie Never Let Me Go, where she stars alongside her former Pride And Prejudice co-star Keira Knightley.

The star explained just how fortunate she feels to be enjoying a successful acting career.

“I love it so much, I’m so lucky and I do want to tell nice stories,” she said.

“My escape is probably as important as allowing the audience to escape.”
