Carey felt like a fighter while filming “Shame”

Posted by Fram on Dec 20th, 2011 under Articles, Carey News

Carey Mulligan says she and Michael Fassbender were like “boxers in a ring” while filming scenes for Shame.

The British actress stars in the Steve McQueen-directed erotic drama alongside Michael.

The risqué movie follows sex-addict Brandon, played by Michael. Carey takes on the part of his wayward younger sister Sissy.

Carey says filming with Michael was intense.

“Some of the scenes were just so combustible. We would do a scene, the scene where I walk in on him in the bathroom, and he comes running out after me and attacks me and I run after him. After takes like that, we’d kind of march off around the room from each other like boxers in a ring. Then we’d come back at each other,” she explained in an interview with Stylist magazine.

“He had free reign to throw me around because he wasn’t going to hurt me. There were days where it was kind of more lighter, it was easier, but a lot of the me and Michael stuff was pretty intense.”

Carey sings in the film, and there has been a lot made of her rendition of the classic New York, New York. The star was terrified to perform in the film, and says Steve’s intimate filming techniques didn’t help.

“I had a vocal coach. It was daunting, it was so exposing singing, and Steve insisted on shooting me from like five centimeters from my face,” she smiled.

Carey also tackled her first nude scene in the movie. Despite the revealing scenes the 26-year-old felt at ease on set.

“I thought it would be [a big deal], but it turned out to actually not be. It wasn’t nerve wracking in the end. It felt very small, and no-one made a big deal. I would never have done it if I didn’t have complete faith in Steve. Michael’s naked the whole way through, so I had nothing to complain about really,” she giggled.
